Cliff Iler, who as university counsel led interactions this year with the Department of Justice, has been named general counsel at the University of Arizona.

In July, Board of Visitors Rector Rachel Sheridan (Col class of ’94, Law class of ’98) told the Faculty Senate that Iler was “leading every interaction” between the board and the DOJ before then-President Jim Ryan (Law class of ’92) resigned. The DOJ investigation, now paused, appears to be focused primarily on admissions practices.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares appointed Iler in 2022. According to a news release announcing Iler’s University of Arizona appointment in October, that school’s top legal adviser does not report to the state’s attorney general.

In late October, Miyares appointed Deputy University Counsel Barry Meek as Iler’s interim replacement.
