The University of Virginia Press, in partnership with the National Archives and Documents Compass at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, has launched Founders Online, a website offering free access to the papers of six of America’s founding fathers: George Washington, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

Nearly 120,000 digitized documents are available in an easily searchable format, and another 55,000 documents will be added to the site over the next three years. “This resource will be of immense value for the public to understand both the world and intentions of the nation’s founders,” says Kathleen Williams, executive director of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
