Launched in 2019 with a goal of raising $5 billion, UVA’s Honor the Future Campaign hit that mark 18 months early, then reached another milestone. In June, UVA announced that the campaign had crossed the $6 billion threshold, setting a record for the university and making it one of the largest campaigns ever by a public university.

More than 250,000 donors contributed to the campaign, then-President Jim Ryan (Law class of ’92) said in announcing the figure.

“Six billion is much more than a number, of course,” Ryan said. “It represents investments in critical areas of the university, from teaching and research to health care, to student access and to athletics, to name a few. This campaign will benefit our students, faculty and staff for generations to come, and I’m deeply grateful to all those who have supported our efforts.”

The $6 billion figure was announced with about three weeks left in the campaign, which ended June 30. The final total will put UVA in rare company. The University of California, Berkeley, raised $7.37 billion in a campaign that ended in 2024. The University of Michigan raised $5.28 billion in a campaign that ended in 2018 and launched a campaign last year with a goal of raising $7 billion.
