The camera sees what we can’t
Charlottesville photographer Andrew Shurtleff in late March made these dramatic photographs of Grounds under quarantine using infrared technology, which captures wavelengths of light outside the spectrum of what the human eye can see. The result is a high-contrast image with a nearly dreamlike look.
Mortarboard messages stand out from the crowds
During Final Exercises, graduates stream down the Lawn in an exuberant sea of color. Every piece of regalia carries meaning, but the most personalized messages of all adorn the simple black mortarboards. Each year, many UVA students transform their personal canvas into a declaration of nostalgia or humor, triumph or gratitude. Enjoy a few of our recent favorites.
