UVA Magazine E-newsletter Awarded Top Prize

The University of Virginia Magazine e-newsletter received the top prize in the nation in the 2010 Circle of Excellence competition sponsored by CASE.

The e-newsletter, which is distributed eight times a year as a companion to the quarterly print magazine, was praised by judges as being “head and shoulders above the others” in the category of Web-Based or Electronic HTML External Audience Periodicals.

“The layout was simple yet elegant, with excellent use of white space, typography and images,” judges said. “The navigation is user-friendly. The editorial content is consistently interesting and well written.”

In awarding the Grand Gold Award, judges also cited the video content of the publication and singled out a segment (“Desegregating UVA,” October 2009) on UVA’s first black students, describing it as “edgy, yet handled with intelligence, sensitivity and integrity. The video held the interest of viewers—even those who have no ties to the University of Virginia.”

CASE (the Council for Advancement and Support of Education) sponsors the Circle of Excellence competition to honor individuals and institutions that excel in the arena of advancement programs and educational communications.
